Latest Development in LEDES and UTBMS Standards

Initiation: 3/30/2010
Publication: 6/15/2010
Analyst: RMC

Synopsis

The Legal Electronic Data Exchange Standard, or LEDES, is well recognized as the sole initiative in creating and maintaining an open data standard for legal-related billing, budgeting, time keeping and other financial related information.  The LEDES standard is administered, maintained and developed by the LEDES Oversight Committee (LOC); the LOC is comprised of corporations and law firms, and e-billing solution vendors (software and service providers.)  LOC provides information through their website, although participation in LOC is by membership.

In addition, the Uniform Task Based Management System, or UTBMS, is a standards based coding scheme originated by the American Bar Association and the legal industry, is also under LOC's management. The LEDES and UTBMS are often considered together as a package of standard components in e-invoicing / e-billing solutions.

This New Research project, entitled Latest Development in LEDES and UTBMS Standards, reviews and discusses the latest LEDES / UTBMS developments.  The research and report will cover:

  • A historical timeline of LEDES and UTBMS
  • Description of how specialty practice areas are covered in LEDES and the UTBMS code sets
  • A review of the current LEDES and UTBMS codes and how they are implemented
  • A review of vendors currently using LEDES and UTBMS
  • A discussion of future direction of LEDES and UTBMS under the LOC and within the legal industry
